Work Placements
Our work placements provide you with an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge you need to re-enter the workforce. We understand that mental health issues, addiction recovery, criminal histories, and other barriers make access to education and employment difficult. That is where we can help.
Whether you’re looking to develop new skills, rebuild confidence or gain a fresh start, our work placements offer a structured pathway towards your employment goals.

To apply you need to:
- Be a Greenwich resident aged 18 or over
- Be interested in learning skills and building your confidence to enable you to make decisions about finding employment or any other opportunities available to you at a future date
- Have a long term health condition such as mental health problems, substance / alcohol misuse recovery problems or other disadvantages e.g. offending / repeat offending
- Receiving support from a GP, Community Mental Health Team or other mental health professional around mental health problems, drug and alcohol misuse / recovery problems or other disadvantages including offending / repeat offending.

We are currently offering placements in the following areas:
SMaRT® garage services:
SMaRT Garage services is First Step Trust’s social enterprise garage in Woolwich SE18. The garage provides opportunities for you to get involved in all aspects of the trade including, servicing vehicles, changing tyres, using diagnostic equipment and a range of other specialist tools.
In addition to being involved in on-the-job-learning you will get the opportunity to learn and develop your skills using Virtual Reality programmes and equipment. You can also:
- Enrol in our 10 module programme and start your training to become a motor vehicle mechanic
- Get involved in helping out with garage reception, customer service, ordering parts and other administrative tasks
First Step Trust Main Office:
Finance: learn all aspects of working in a small finance team including managing transactions and using Sage (industry standard finance system)
You don’t need previous experience to get involved in the garage or our main office.
How Do We Support You?
First Step Trust works with all workforce members on their own personal development, this includes:
- A Personal Development Plan (PDP), which will be created with you at the start and reviewed
- A work reference after 3 months of regular
- Building / updating your CV, help with job searching, applications and interview preparation.
