‘Tis the season to feast and be jolly!
First Step Trust’s Abbevilles restaurant, based in Clapham Common, normally offers a wide range of meals and sandwiches to eat in or takeaway. We also cater for functions. In the spirit of the festive season, this week, staff from the restaurant baked a whopping 1,548 mince pies and129 litres of homemade non-alcoholic mulled wine for 43 GP Surgeries around Lambeth, ordered by South London and Maudsley (SLAM) NHS.
What makes it even more of an achievement, is that Abbevillles not only can keep up with Santa Claus on the mince pie making front at Christmas, but the restaurant also works within the local community providing work placements and training for people with mental health and other disadvantages in Lambeth.
The workforce can do on the job training whilst receiving employment support and gaining qualifications in Food Safety level 1 & 2 and allergen training. Abbevilles has a 5-star food hygiene rating and is staffed by experienced chefs with level 2 & level 3 food hygiene qualifications.
“It was an interesting experience making so many mince pies and doing our own mulled wine. The Team loved getting stuck in and we appreciate the work from the NHS as it helps towards us delivering training and on the job skills for people in Lambeth who have mental health issues, learning disabilities and other disadvantages.” – Katie Ryan Southern Regional Manager of Abbevilles restaurant.
On Friday 10th December, staff from local mental health services, Oxleas NHS then descended on the restaurant to celebrate their Christmas party and taste the delicious Christmas menu on offer that is available to members of the public too.
